Learning Foundations and Mastery Methods

K-5 Pod

Meet our Founders (K-2) and Masterminds (3-5)!

Our Elementary scholars are a mixed-aged homeschool community that meets Mondays-Thursdays from 9:30-3:30 at the Greenbrier Learning center. This program focuses on K-2 foundational learning (Founders) and 3-5 mastery methods (Masterminds). Through relationship-based classroom management, scholars engage in a universal learning routine that supports diverse needs and creates a positive, pro-social learning environment. Also, in partnership with local businesses, enrichment classes and field trips are planned throughout the year to enhance academics and social-emotional growth.

Mixed Methods Approach to Core Academic Learning.

Learning occurs in three different ways: behavioral learning (drill and practice), cognitive learning ( gaining knowledge through thought and meaning) and constructivist learning (applying old knowledge to discover new knowledge and skills)

  • Behavioral learning or rote learning is essential to master handwriting, math facts, counting and cardinality, geographical facts and historical dates, phonics spelling rules, grammar, and reading fluency.

  • Cognitive learning Cognitive learning at Heartwise involves oral and written communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Scholars develop skills through questioning, discussion, reading comprehension, math reasoning, and inquiry-based science. Historical analysis fosters a deeper understanding of artifacts and world changes over time.

  • Constructivist learning builds confidence, creativity, and identity. Written response, reflection, artistic expression, research, probability and statistics, journaling, STEM activities, and Legos are all examples of constructivist learning. They take the information they know or have learned to formulate their own knowledge of the subject.

Our 2024-2025 Learning Adventures

We follow the 2023 Virginia Standards of Learning and beyond

The Commonwealth Learning Partnership has implemented a 5 C’s profile of a Virginia graduate that prepares them for a global workforce. These 5 Cs include: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, citizenship, and creative thinking to modernize education across the commonwealth. The new standards have these 21st century skills in mind, but the world continues to evolve. Therefore, Heartwise Scholars uses VA Standards of Learning as a baseline of objectives, but we implement adaptive curriculum supports and enrichments that empower our scholars to optimize learning potential and well-being.

We are thankful for our student mentors! On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we have high school and college student mentors who come to the center to partner with scholars on Ohana projects and be role models for positive social-emotional habits.

Thanks to our enrichment partners, we offer Art lessons, Music classes, a Social Skills club, and STEM field trips. Shout out to Art By Leisa, Creative Music and Entertainment, Social Butterflies Club, and Solstice Hybrid Academy! Check out their programming! They are all fantastic to work with and highly relational!
